Plans are underway to move York Habitat’s retail location, changing up the current business model.
“It’s a great new opportunity for everyone.” Patrick Ball, York Habitat Interim Executive Director, has spent the past few months surveying the communal impact Habitat brings to York County. “The current location of the York Habitat ReStore requires a significant amount of time and resources that we believe would best be used in other capacities across the organization to support families in need. We’re currently in negotiations at a new location to confirm it will be the best opportunity for us.” Rick Burns, ReStore Manager, shares his thoughts on the relocation: “our Grand Opening and the following months were successful. We were able to sell quality home furnishings and building materials at a fraction of the costs of other stores not only to those who are looking for a great deal, but others who may need more affordable home improvement options. We all feel that this move will allow us to recommit to the mission of being a year-round fundraiser for York Habitat for Humanity’s construction efforts and other costs associated with educating future homeowners in our program.” “This move will allow us to be better stewards of our dollars, ensuring as much as possible is given back to the families in need.” Since 1985, York Habitat for Humanity has built 145 homes to serve over 750 local community members. Through partnerships with individuals, businesses, and other organizations, we provide low-income homeownership opportunities to families in need. Families can spend 12-24 months completing the homeownership program, which consists of mandatory volunteer hours (or, what we call Sweat Equity), financial literacy, and other relevant educational courses to ensure the family is successful once moving into their forever home. All proceeds from the ReStore are returned directly back to the Habitat mission, allowing the mission to build more - and to do it better than before. “Shopping at charity supporting stores like the Habitat ReStore is more than the feeling when you find that needed or special piece, rather, it’s the feeling of knowing you are helping a neighbor that may be experiencing hard times.” “As stated, we are already in negotiations with a new lease holder. Plans and arrangements are underway. While the new building may not seem as perfect as our current location, it will serve us perfectly. Because we’re not erecting a new building - just some basic remodeling and maintenance - we hope it will be done in just a couple of months.” “While our physical store front will be closed - you can expect to continue your ReStore shopping online with a new website coming soon! You can stay up to date with everything ReStore by following us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. We’ll see you soon.” Boilerplate Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell building materials, appliances, new and gently used furniture, and home accessories at a fraction of the retail price. In fiscal year 2020 alone, Habitat ReStores raised more than $76 million to help support Habitat’s mission while also diverting reusable material from landfills. With more than 1,000 stores in seven countries, Habitat ReStores use their proceeds to help build or improve homes locally and around the world. A message from our Executive Director:During this unique and crazy year, having a home has never meant more. Now more than ever, our homes became a safe haven, provided shelter from the storm, and gave us hope for a brighter tomorrow. Imagine for a moment that you lost your home, a place of comfort and stability. Or even worse, never had a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home. Please join us in continuing our mission of ensuring everyone has a place to call home by contributing to York Habitat for Humanity. Your donation will continue the work that has built 138 homes and helped more than 700 men, women, and children from low-income families find home ownership in York County. We are thankful for your support, now more than ever. We would not be where we are today without your continued dedication to supporting our mission and we are forever grateful.
