Becoming a Homeowner

A Hand-up, not a Hand-out

The families who are selected by York Habitat or Humanity's homeownership program are not impoverished and the homes are not given to them.  For instance, a family of four must make at least $22,773 (see income guidelines below) annually to even be considered for an application!  Each and every homeowner works very hard to earn a home through sweat equity hours (225 per adult) and then pays for the home with a zero percent interest mortgage!

Please take a moment to fill out the Pre-Application survey by clicking here!

onthly informational meetings will be held on the 1st Thursday of every month at the York Habitat for Humanity office.

To qualify for a Habitat home in York, a family (any size) must have a significant need for decent, affordable housing as well as the ability to pay for the home, at the cost it took to construct or rehabilitate it, by way of monthly zero-percent interest mortgage payments.

  • The first step?  Attend a York Habitat for Humanity Informational Meeting.

Fill out an application ($10 non-refundable fee, which is needed to pull up your credit report) at the meeting and sign up for an interview.

Once you have gone through the interview process and have been approved, the amount of time that passes before you can move into your new home varies.  Generally it takes a year; it all depends on the property and how long it takes to attain, fund, and rehab or construct.

  • Each adult living in the home must perform 225 hours of sweat equity!  May include work done on the construction site, in our office, and help with special fundraising or promotional events.
  • A $500 downpayment is required before going into mortgage.
  • Debt level of the applicant must be less than 40% of his or her income.
  • Each applicant must have an annual income within a particular range, which is based on the average income for all of York County as well as family size.  This range is described below:
