Becoming a Homeowner

A Hand-up, not a Hand-out:

Individuals and families who are selected for Habitat's home ownership program are typically not homeless because future homeowners must have some means of paying the home mortgage. On the other hand, the individuals and families selected are of low financial means.  For example, Habitat homeowners do not have the financial resources to qualify for conventional mortgages or to purchase conventionally priced homes. Future homeowners supplement their financial investments with "sweat equity" hours and support the overall mission of Habitat with the gift of their time and talents. Habitat's hand is reaching out to give people in the York community a hand-up! If you or someone you know is interested in exploring home ownership with Habitat, contact us via phone 854-6168. Our next home may be your home!

First Steps:

  • Fill out the pre-application form, and someone will contact you
  • Attend a York Habitat for Humanity Informational Meeting
  • Submit an application.
  • Note: A $10 per person non-refundable credit report fee is required of all applicants. Debt level of the applicant must be less than 40% of his or her income.
  • Schedule a personal meeting with Habitat staff and "Family Services" volunteers.
  • If approved, each adult living in the home must perform 225 hours of sweat equity. Sweat equity may include work at a construction site, assisting Habitat staff in the office, and helping with special fundraising or promotional events.
  • Submit a $500 down payment prior to settlement (typically a year after acceptance into the program.)
