Begins Second Year of Changing Lives

On November 17th, York Habitat will once again launch the "Hope is Only a Home Away" campaign. Please keep an eye out for it to arrive in your mailbox soon.  It is the second year for this campaign that brings new hope to lower income families desperately in need of safe, adequate housing. It's the annual campaign that keeps on giving as funds raised build Habitat homes; these homes are sold to qualified Habitat homeowners and then their mortgage payments recirculate back into the Habitat program to help us build more homes for deserving families.

A donation to the campaign brings new hope to families that they truly can own their home. For Habitat's program is one that helps families who have no other opportunity to share in part of the American dream of home ownership.

We urge you to make a lifelong impact in the lives of hardworking, deserving families who are trying to make a better life for themselves! Your donation is sure to go a long way in making a difference for hope is truly only just a home away for Habitat families right here in York County. Please give generously!

Building on Faith 2011 - Congregations unite in Red Lion

September usually reminds people of crisp apples, cool fall days, changing leaves and sending the kids back to school. At York Habitat for Humanity, as well as affiliates nationwide, the second week of September reminds us all of Building on Faith Week. The Building on Faith Program is one started by Habitat for Humanity International and focuses on uniting faith communities to put their faith in action and build homes for God's people in need. For many, many years, York Habitat for Humanity has been proud to participate in this amazing part of our ministry!

This year's Building on Faith Project brings congregations back to the quaint community of Red Lion to renovate a two bedroom home for a deserving, qualified family. The build is scheduled to begin during the 2011 Building on Faith Week from September 13th. After this "Blitz Week", construction will continue on the home located at 413 West Broadway in Red Lion on Fridays and every other Saturday until it is completed. To finish this build in the Spring of 2012, we are calling on the faith communities for their support!

To volunteer for this project please contact volunteer@yorkhabitat.org

Reminder: Must have completed construction orientation prior to volunteering on

the job site.

More churches and congregations are needed to make this year's project a success and to expand York habitat mission to yet another homeowner. To join in this spiritually uplifting project, we encourage you to join in this rewarding experience by calling the Habitat office at 854-6168  or by emailing volunteer@yorkhabitat.org with your contact information and help the ministry of Habitat live on!

Have you ever considered planned giving?

Whether you are writing your first will or updating an existing one, we hope you'll include a gift for York Habitat for Humanity, in your plans. In a world where safe, decent, affordable housing seems out of reach to so many. A bequest will bring you joy

and will strengthen and extend our faith that safe, decent, affordable housing can and will be achievable.

You don't have to be a millionaire to make a difference

in the world.

Bequests are for everyone and anyone. They are both sensible and simple gifts. A charitable bequest allows you to keep your financial options open.

You can use your will to give a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a

specific item, such as real estate, a boat, artwork, the family silver, copyright or royalty

income, or savings bonds. Whatever you wish to give, we want to make it easy.

Bequests and other estate gifts come in all shapes and sizes and

are as different as the people who create them.

A planned gift can be given in many ways, including cash, charitable trusts, life insurance, retirement plans, bequests, appreciated property, charitable gift annuities and donor advised funds.

 Whole House Sponsors
With the struggling economy, several local organizations who desire to sponsor homes are making 2-4 year pledges for future whole-house builds. The Realtors Association, Johnson Controls, York College, State Farm, and William Penn High School have made commitments to sponsor homes and employees, students, and members will take an active role in both raising funds and constructing the homes which will be named after their organizations.

Veteran's build 2012

Since October 2001, approximately 1.6 million members of the Armed Forces have served in Iraq or Afghanistan.

  • There are about 37 million dependents (spouses and dependent children) of living veterans and survivors of deceased veterans. Together they represent 20% of the U.S. population.

Of those that are currently serving actively in the US Armed Services, 40,000 currently reside in York County. By Memorial Day 2012, York Habitat for Humanity hopes to have funding in place to break ground on our Veterans Build. We are building these homes in hopes of providing simple, decent, affordable, energy-efficient housing for two deserving families who will actively partner with Habitat in its unique homeownership program.

The “Veterans Build” is truly about transforming lives as well as supporting and honoring those who have sacrificed for their country.

Regarding construction, York Habitat for Humanity will be building a duplex hoping to be able to provide 2 veterans and their families with decent and affordable housing they would not otherwise be able to obtain.

To be selected as a Habitat homeowner, applicants must first meet the income guidelines of 35-60% of the York County median income and have a debt-to-income ratio of less than 40% including the estimated housing cost. Upon meeting these requirements, the “applicants” become “candidates” and must work 225 hours per adult on Habitat homes, take first-time home buyer classes, homeownership education classes to aid in the transition from renter to homeowner, financial management courses and participate in one-on-one partner mentoring. When all requirements have been fulfilled and the candidate has saved for the small down payment to meet HUD requirements for closing assistance, the homeowner receives a 30 year zero % interest mortgage. Homeowners are then vested in their neighborhoods and become an addition to the counties viable tax base.

The “Veterans Build” will be conducted in partnership with local businesses, veterans (both retired and active duty) from various bases in PA and MD, as well as volunteers from across the county. Our goal to begin construction is to obtain $75,000 in cash and in-kind contributions per house and to line up community members to assist in the rehabilitation of the homes. We need to raise at least $75,000 by Memorial Day 2012 to begin groundbreaking, with project completion targeted for Veteran’s Day 2012. Additionally, should family needs require these homes to be ADA compliant, Habitat will make the necessary accommodations.

The “Veterans Build” is just one more demonstration of how York Habitat for Humanity is “Building Better Lives…One House at a Time.” Please consider providing financial support to make this endeavor possible.

To sign up to be involved Click here or contact Miles Worden at 717-659-7487 or 717-854-6168 to discuss how you can become a sponsor or volunteer of this program.
