We are excited to announce our July Volunteer in the Spotlight, Andy Hershey.  Andy, also known as “Doc” on the build site, has been volunteering with us for 8 years.  He is a member of our Senior Corps group, and is one of our best painters!  Andy began volunteering with us through his church, and found that he really enjoyed himself and wanted to make it a regular thing.  Andy says “I volunteer with York Habitat because I enjoy helping others, and it brings structure to my week and keeps me active. I enjoy the comradery on the build sites and I’ve made some really good friends. I believe that I’ve gained as much or more than I’ve given.” Thank you Andy!  We don’t know what we’d do without you!

York Habitat for Humanity has announced that the organization with begin hosting information sessions for potential new homeowners. Recently, the number of York County families looking for home applications has increased six-fold, so the non-profit has developed a new way to get to many families and as quickly as possible.

“We are ecstatic and recognize that there is a large interest in our program as we continue to grow as a Habitat for Humanity affiliate. We strive to make the application process as efficient and as personalized as possible,” said Amanda Adams, York Habitat’s Family Services Manager.

To achieve this goal, York Habitat for Humanity will be holding three information sessions a month.  These sessions, which will host several families at one time, will be varied time-wise with one each in the morning, afternoon and evening. This will help to accommodate a variety of different employment schedules.

Adams points out that these sessions will dive into the application particulars and explain the criteria that is needed to become a Habitat homeowner.  Everything from required income levels to family participation in sweat equity hours will be on the two-hour meeting agenda.

To sign up for these sessions, those interested in becoming a Habitat for Humanity homeowner are asked to go to Habitat’s web site at yorkhabitat.org and then hit upcoming events. Sessions that have been scheduled may be selected at this time.

For questions and more information, contact Mark Mattern at 717-854-6168, Ext. 102 or amanda@yorkhabitat.org.

What a day for Donations. Our good friends at Exelon Generation dropped off a table saw, miter saw and stand. This, folks, is top of the line stuff! Thanks so much for thinking about York Habitat for Humanity. This equipment will make things a lot better out on the work site. Thanks, Exelon!

We are thrilled to announce Jen Shaffer as our Volunteer in the Spotlight this month. Jen is a committed construction volunteer, sits on our Women Build Committee as well as our Volunteer Services Committee, and is a regular at our Habitat events. When asked why she began volunteering with Habitat she said, “When I was a teenager my Mom took me to North Dakota to help rebuild houses for flood victims. It was an amazing experience. I learned so much and met some inspiring volunteers.” She continued on to say “I continue to volunteer because of the people and the cause. I love our Volunteer Services Committee and everyone I met through the construction builds. I am really looking forward to bringing my son to a work site sometime this year and hope to share a love of building up our community. I want to continue to do my small part to give back to my community and my family.” Thank you for all that you do Jen!!
