York Habitat for Humanity Plans to Hold Home Dedication For New Dover Home

10/23/2018

York Habitat for Humanity will dedicate their 132nd home to first-time homeowner Kelley Page and her son on Saturday, November 3, 2018.  This property, a three-bedroom two-story unit, is located at 109 N. Main Street in Dover.   The public is invited to attend.

As with all of York Habitat’s homes, this Habitat for Humanity house was built primarily by volunteers, including staff from several local businesses.  Many local organizations and churches also contributed countless hours completing the project.  Close to 4,000 volunteer hours were completed in building this home including several shifts of just female workers during York Habitat’s Women Build Week sponsored by Lowes.

Funds for this project were provided by, State of PA, PHFA’s PHARE Program, First Energy, Columbia Gas and the Horn Foundation.

Helping to complete the build, and donating materials as well as expertise, were Kinsley Materials, Exterior Expressions, The Wolf Organization, York Building Products, York/Adams Professional Masons Association, York Technical Institute and York Vo-Tech.

The Page family has been working with York Habitat for Humanity for more than a year now with the actual construction taking just six months.  During that time, Kelley prepared for becoming a homeowner by attending Habitat classes and keeping a strict monthly budget. Kelley was also required to perform at least 225 hours of “Sweat Equity” to the project.  Friends, family and co-workers of the Page’s also put in hours working on the new home.

The official Dedication Ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 3rd and members of the public are invited.   An open house will take place immediately following the Dedication Ceremony, to give everyone a chance to tour the home and meet Kelley and her son.

Parking for those attending the dedication is available on the grassy area behind the home.  Guests are asked to turn on Butter Road off of Main Street (Route 74) and then take a left onto City Hall Alley to the parking area.  Please contact York Habitat with any questions.

York Habitat for Humanity has announced that the organization has hired a new member for the staff.  Long-time Habitat enthusiast, Athena White, has been added to the Habitat team as the organization’s new Fundraising and Development Coordinator.

Athena comes to York Habitat with diverse non-profit experience from working at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory to Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna. During her time at Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna, which is located in Bel Air, Maryland, White was the Events and Communications Coordinator.

White also chaired three different volunteer committees while at Susquehanna.   These groups planned and ran three major, successful, fundraising events each year. The Glen Rock resident also managed the affiliate’s social media and marketing endeavors, increasing the visibility of the Susquehanna Habitat to record levels.

“I am thrilled to become a member of the York Habitat team! I am a firm believer that everyone deserves a decent place to live. Together we have the ability to help families help themselves and work towards a brighter future,” said White during her first week of work at her new affiliate.  “I did my research, I really like the direction we are heading here in York. Lots of exciting things on the drawing board.”
